Motorcycle Tips「DIY」Replacing Troublesome Split Pins With Beta Pins | How Durable Is It?

How to

Removing wheel axle shafts and loosening nuts for tire changes and chain adjustments. For riders who do maintenance on a regular basis, this is nothing special, but if done carelessly, it is a serious operation that can lead to terrible results. You don't want to imagine a wheel falling off while you are riding because you forgot to tighten the nut. To avoid such dangers, the split pin is a part attached to the shaft. It is just a soft metal pin, but it prevents the nut and shaft from falling off even if the nut should loosen.

However, this split pin is a troublesome part, especially for riders who work on it frequently. The reason is that it is basically disposable (due to the fact that it is attached by deforming it, its strength decreases after one use), and a new one must be put on every time it is removed. Also, when installing it, it is necessary to use tools such as pliers, which can cause it to come off if installed carelessly. This is a little stressful during maintenance! I am sure there are many of you who have experienced this. This is where the beta pin comes in. As the name suggests, it is a pin in the shape of a "beta," but if you use it instead of a split pin, installation is one-touch and no tools are required. It is also reusable.
You can free yourself from the stress of split pins at once!

However, what I am concerned about is its strength. Is it safe to use for axle shafts that are subject to heavy loads?
This is the diary of "MTXR" who conducted a durability test of this Beta pin in MOTO HACK. MTXR also installed beta pins on the front and rear axle shafts of his Z250SL to free himself from the hassle of split pins. He ran the Beta-pin on a mountain pass to check its strength, and it didn't seem to cause any problems! However, it is important to note that the Beta pins must be the correct size for the bolts and nuts to be installed. If they are too small, they will not fit on the shaft (will not engage properly), and if they are too large, they will fall off.

Rear wheel elevator pin

I bought this rear wheel elevator pin for the NSR, thinking it might work for the Z because of its shape and size. I thought I would replace it with a new one after removing the split pin at the chain adjustment the other day.

Haaaaai! It's beautifully ugly. It's a big deal for me to be so misjudged. So, the rear wheel elevator pin for NSR is not attached to Z/Ninja250SL.

Obtained these two at a local home improvement center. Stainless steel elevator pins for 20 pie.
168 yen (1.5 USD) for a pack of 4. The left one is for when they don't work.

Ooh-oh.! What a perfect fit!
If you had told me earlier, I wouldn't have had to buy those fugly, expensive baiter pins.
No, it's just in case NSR comes down to our house someday.

So, the maintenance is much easier and more reasonable.
The normal split pins seemed easy to remove, but it was a hassle, and this one is more reusable (split pins are not reusable), so I recommend it.

Beta-pin endurance experiment (exaggeration)

Work Process 1

Beta pins were used for the rear, I wondered about the front, but they were perfect for the front as well! It was perfect for the fronts as well. Yesterday and today we had good weather, and yesterday I was out of energy to change tires on two motorcycles, so today was the day to experiment with riding. I was wondering if the chain would not come off when I was driving on a mountain pass with beta pins installed on both the front and the rear without any supplementary ties. Also, I hadn't run at all after cleaning and adjusting the chain, so I wanted to make sure that nothing was wrong with it.

As a result, it did not come off or turn at all. Aside from intentional removal by others, there is no problem at all without auxiliary fixation, etc. in normal running and stopping conditions. If there is an opportunity to get off and leave the motorcycle, etc., it is not a prank.
(I don't think it is for the purpose of theft. If you have no such opportunity and just run back to your motorcycle, it is fine to leave it as it is.)

The product shown in the photo is for front and rear use.

Thank you for your valuable ideas,「MTXR」who introduced the "Rear wheel elevator pin".
