Popularity and price remain high! 6 surprisingly affordable “out-of-production 400cc 4-cylinder naked” Models

Motorcycle

There is a demand for things that don't exist in any field of the world. The same is true in the world of motorcycles, where as a result of popularity, the price of used motorcycles on the market is often more than double the price of new motorcycles of the past. The popularity of the 1970s air-cooled Kawasaki models, including the Z1 series, seems to have accelerated even further beyond the 21st century, but domestic 400cc four-cylinder naked motorcycles are also rising in popularity and price. From this category, we have looked at discontinued motorcycles that may still be affordable.

Many 4-cylinder 400cc naked motorcycles have been out of production for over 15 years.

Since 1990, when the naked boom started with the Kawasaki Zephyr, the four Japanese manufacturers have released 400cc four-cylinder naked models one after another. Honda entered the market in earnest with the CB400 Super Four (hereinafter SF), Yamaha introduced the XJR400, and Suzuki the GSX400 Impulse. However, except for Honda, which produced the CB400SF series until 2022, Yamaha and Suzuki withdrew from this category in 2008 when new emission regulations came into effect.

Kawasaki, which made the Zephyr (400) a huge hit, used that momentum to launch the water-cooled four-cylinder ZRX (400) in 1994, and made waves in the same category with two models, air-cooled and water-cooled. In 1996, they released the Zephyr χ, an improved version of the air-cooled Zephyr with a four-valve engine. However, Kawasaki was forced to respond to stricter emissions regulations and decided to end production in 2008. It is still fresh in our memory that the series ended with the release of the Final Edition of the Zephyr χ the following year in 2009.

Honda's CB400SF will also be discontinued in 2022, and all 400cc four-cylinder naked models will be wiped out. In the first place, the current situation is that there are no other full-scale 400cc four-cylinder models other than Kawasaki's super sports, the ZX-4R/RR.
