It is the new model of Honda CBR 650R loaded with a 648cc parallel 4-cylinder engine. Since "R" became a sporty character from the comfortable "F" position of the predecessor CBR650F, is it even more sporty "RR" when comparing position?! It was reported by Freelance Writer Yatagai Hiroaki.

The change from CBR650F to CBR650R approaches young generation

It is a model change this time with changing also the motorcycle name. If you look closely, it is a pretty large modification. The upright fork is inverted, and the brake system is strengthened. The styling is no longer a "RR" series, thanks to its low-set position. The "young generation" was targeted for this CBR650R model by the development team. CBR650 "F" has been the target touring enthusiasts of the market shrink flowing in the adventure tourer. It was decided to approach a new purchaser.

[HONDA CBR650R 2019 Mdel Japanese Specification Price: 1,036,800 yen - 1,06 9,200 yen] It has a basic sports model of the parallel 4-cylinder 649cc. The 2019 model changed the name of the motorcycle from CBR650F to CBR650R, and the appearance and contents of the motorcycle turned offensive, but it is also compatible with the conventional user-friendly "F" Concept.

[HONDA CBR650F 2017 Model Japanese Specification Price: 1,031,400 yen] It is a full cowl road sport equipped with a newly developed direct four engine, and has appeared as a global strategic model. In the 2017 model change, it had been changed the headlights to LEDs and the power also increased 7ps. • Water-cooled 4-stroke parallel 4 cylinders DOHC4 valve 648cc, 90ps/11000rpm, 213kg

The significant sports enhancement, no longer reach the range of "RR"?!

Now, the transition to the "R" is to further strengthen the sports performance and to obtain the corresponding sporty styling. It is an engine that was particularly focused on the driving performance aspect. While the existing "F" was a medium-low-speed-oriented character based on the premise of touring use, the "R" focused on sharp blows and power feel. From reviewing valve timing by the camshaft, it achieves 95ps of 5ps up in "F" ratio by compression ratio up, review of intake and exhaust system, etc. Moreover, unlike the CB650R, it is equipped with ram air intake which has a common body. It's amazing that 3kw (approximately 4ps) can be expected to power up in the 230km/h region, which is the fastest due to its effect.

It was about changing the name from "F" to "R". It was to change the aim concept from the bottom. Does it mean that changing of "R" is a great success?

It is the major modification of the engine. It increases the overlap time of the valve and makes it blow up sharply. The compression ratio is also up by the piston change. The red zone was also increased by 2000rpm.

The comparison with "F". It is changed to the output characteristic which provides the rising feeling without the valley over the peak rotation, and it improves the output of the high revolution range for the conventional model. By increasing the throttle response from the full throttle to the 3000-8000rpm in the middle open range, it is possible to achieve a smooth ride in winding roads and other fields.

[CBR650R] Seat height is 810mm. It is an image in which the leaning forward is only slightly enhanced by the height of the seat of the upright position. You can do well on foot grounding which still has an allowance. The rider is 172cm tall and weighs 68kg.

[CBR1000RR SP] Seat height is 820mm. In addition to the low handlebar, the footpeg position rises, and when compared to the "R" Series, it is felt that the clearance between elbow and knee is much smaller. It floated about 3cm with the foot grounding.

Main Specification ■ Length: 2130, Overall Width: 750, Overall Height :1150, Wheelbase: 1450, Seat Height: 810 (each mm), Vehicle Weight: 207kg (Equipped) ■ Water-cooled 4-stroke Parallel 4-cylinder 648cc 95ps/12000rpm, 6.5kg-m / 8500rpm, Transmission 6-gear Return, Fuel Tank Capacity: 15L ■ Brake F = Double Disc R = Disc Tire Size F = 120/70 ZR17 R = 180/55 ZR17

{HONDA CBR650R (Left)/CBR 1000RR SP (Right) It is a CBR 650R given a sharp styling that looks like the "RR" series. The point to determine is per blinker position?

As well as CBR400R, the position of the clip-on handlebar is relocated under the top bridge to create a sporty position. It is a result of prioritizing the enjoyment of the winding rather than the touring performance.

It was given the same set as the upper model, called inverted front fork & radial mount caliper. The disc is from a petal of 320mm, it will be 10mm smaller but there will be 6 to 10 floating pins.

The pivot plate is from steel forging, the frame is about 3kg lighter, with it being changed to the Monaca Press. The rigid surface is the same as the previous work, but he seems quite particular about how to do it.

It moves in a backward and forward footpeg to match the lower handlebar position. Alos, it has become sporty without footpeg rubber due to the benefit of vibration reduction by frame analysis.

The rear shock has the same linkless specification, but a new pillow ball is adopted for mounting at the bottom. It seems to move well even in the state where the stress is applied to the frame in the corner and it becomes big.

[Developer Interview] Where is the difference between "R" and "RR"?

"I myself have never been involved in the development of the RR system, but RR is close to circuit use. The user-friendly parts such as loading and long touring performance are the secondary image stated by Mr. Noriyoshi Tsutsui (LPL Development Officer). In addition, Mr. Masahiro Yoshida, an LPL agent, has been involved in the "RR" 600R in the past, but held up the concept of "having fun in the winding and breaking it off at the circuit". So that is the image with "RR" and from winding to the circuit. "R" is the place from the city to the winding road." In other words, it is "R" that does not put weight on it which is not possible to run the circuit because of the sportiness in its own way. Mr. Noriyoshi Tsutsui (LPD Development Officer) expressed his thought that the new CBR650R character is a concept of "R" that can be used more closely but focuses on more sports performance. However, it is a position that does is not going to be "RR".

When I read the manufacturer's announcement, from the fact that the name of CBR1000RR comes out in some places, it can be seen that it is the awareness of "RR" which is highly sports in design.

If you look at the CBR650R (left) and the CBR1000 RR side by side, the common points of styling are clearly understood. If the comparison model is not SP, but STD of the same color, it seems to be more difficult to distinguish.
