Is the GPZ900R NINJA Reviving?

Motorcycle & Industry

The GPZ900R, which is the talk of the town, will be revived. However, it is still too early to assume that this rumor is not real. At the end of 2019, Kawasaki suddenly listed the movies of the successive GPZ900Rs on its official YouTube channel.

What is the truth behind it?

Currently, the motorcycle industry is experiencing a boom in the neo-classic category. YAMAHA has released the XSR series one after another, and Honda has also released the CB-R series. Of course, Kawasaki introduced the Z900RS, the modern ZII, to the market. At the Milan Motor Show in November 2019, Suzuki brought back the all-new KATANA.

The KAWASAKI Z900RS was launched at the end of 2017. The development concept is "Timeless Z", and the product development was started with the aim of creating a body that encompasses the entire history of the Z series. The base model is the Z900, but most of the parts are new. The biggest obstacle was the teardrop-shaped fuel tank, which was the symbol of the Z1.

YAMAHA XSR900, unveiled at the 2015 EICMA. The XSR900 was newly developed for the new motorcycle market. The concept is "The Performance Retroster". It shares the same platform as the MT-09, including the frame, engine, and front and rear suspension, and while inheriting the MT-09's excellent characteristics, it has retro and universal styling, as well as new riding performance and functions.

The HONDA CB1000R is a large naked road sport model of the new generation CB series, powered by a liquid-cooled 4-stroke, DOHC, 4-valve, inline 4-cylinder 1000cc engine manufactured since 2017, with a lightweight and compact body that delivers the high quality ride and handling pleasure of a sportbike. It is a large naked road sport model of the new generation CB series.

SUZUKI KATANA was unveiled at the Intermot show in Germany in October 2018. The development concept is "Forging a New Street Legend". From the fuel tank to the tip of the body, the exterior is designed with sharp, flowing lines like a sharpened sword. It has a distinctive face inspired by the GSX1100S KATANA.

That being the case, many people would have liked to see the revival of the GPZ900R, one of the most famous motorcycles of all time. When this video was released, rumors began to circulate in the motorcycle industry that the GPZ900R NINJA was indeed coming back. Unfortunately, this rumor has since faded away due to the global outbreak of coronavirus. However, with the successful development of a vaccine for the coronavirus and the availability of vaccinations, the rumor has reappeared now that the furor has come to an end.

The GPZ900R appeared in the 1986 movie "Top Gun" as the favorite motorcycle of Tom Cruise, the star of the movie. Thanks to the success of the movie, the GPZ900R also became a best-selling model, and was produced until 2003.

The end of the movie also seems to have a deep meaning. The video of the beginning of the movie and the video of the successive models being replaced is also used at the end of the movie. It's as if to say, there' s more to come.

What are the specifications?
If Kawasaki were to develop a new GPZ900R based on the Z900RS, it would probably have the same specs as the Z900RS. The Z900RS may look neo-classic and old-fashioned, but it's got a lot of obvious modern technology, including an assist and slipper clutch, large-diameter ø41mm inverted front forks, and Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC). As a base vehicle, it's perfect.

What about the price?
The Z900RS is priced at Php 664,000 in the Philippines, which means that the GPZ900R, which will be a full cowl model (possibly half cowl), will cost more than that. So I would guess that the price will be around Php 674,000, 10,000 pesos higher.

There is not much information yet, so we can't say for sure, but if it is indeed coming next year, we will start to see development information and patent-related information early next year.

The GPZ900R in the top image is a custom vehicle created by Doremi Collection using the Z900RS as a base model. Doremi Collection is headquartered in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, and is one of the top brands in the old motorcycle customization world, working on a wide range of restoration and repro parts, mainly for the old Z1. In recent years, they are also known for developing and selling the NEO CLASSIC exterior kit, which uses repro parts production technology to recreate the bodywork of the Zephyr, Z900RS, CB1100, and other motorcycles that you have always wanted as a base model.

Z900RS New Style "Nininja"

The GPZ900R is recreated using the inner tank for the Z900RS made by Doremi Collection! The name of the model is "Nininja". The tank cover and cowl are the same size as the original, and special brackets were made to transform it into the Ninja body. Not only does it imitate, but it's a machine filled with Doremi's attention to detail and technology to match the same dimensions as the real thing.
