Since the day the factory was established on July 1, 1955, racing has been a part of Yamaha's DNA. Back then, not long after Yamaha Motor was established, the YA-1 won the Fuji Climbing Race on July 10 in its first appearance, proving that it was a Yamaha product.
Just two years after Yamaha's GP debut, Fumio Ito won Yamaha's first GP on an RD56 at the Belgian Grand Prix, and Yamaha has never looked back since. In 1964, Yamaha won its first world championship and first constructors' title with Phil Read in the 250cc class. This was the beginning of an amazing journey for everyone involved in Yamaha's racing program and the company became one of the most successful manufacturers in the last 60 years with over 500 Grand Prix victories, 38 rider titles, 37 constructor titles and 7 team titles!
In 1964, the competition division debuted a 250cc Grand Prix racer with a white fairing, red stripes and a red front fender. This bold, simple and dynamic red and white color scheme soon became the Yamaha look for Grand Prix road racing and was the forerunner of the Yamaha Speed Block.
To commemorate Yamaha's illustrious Grand Prix history, the 2022 models of the R1, R7, R3 and R125 are now available in the "World GP 60th Anniversary Commemorative Colors".
The World GP 60th Anniversary models R1, R7, R3 and R125 feature a pure white body with red horizontal stripes and white vertical lines to represent red speed blocks. In addition, the yellow front license plate, anniversary emblem, and the red stripe running above the fuel tank and on the tail, are all part of a timeless livery that has remained popular throughout the years.
