When you think of the Tokaido Highway, you probably recall the ukiyoe series "Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido" by Hiroshige Ando or "Tokaido Nakahizakurige" by Ikku Jippensha. In the Edo period (1603-1867), the Tokaido Highway was the main route that supported Japan's transportation and logistics, and even today, the Tomei Expressway and Tokaido Shinkansen connect the two major arteries of Japan. National Route 1 also travels on this route.
