CROSS CUB 110 and SUPER CUB 110 Receive Cast Wheels, Disc Brakes, and New Engines [OSAKA Motorcycle Show News Vol.3]

Motorcycle & Industry

The new CROSS CUB 110 and SUPER CUB 110 were exhibited at the Osaka Motorcycle Show, which opened on March 19, as planned production models. As rumored, the CROSS CUB 110 is equipped with cast wheels and disc brakes, while the SUPER CUB 110 has more luxurious 2-pot calipers. Both models are expected to offer a higher level of performance.

CROSS CUB 110 was unveiled for the first time as a custom motorcycle! It's a new color, matte green.

Following the first public showing of the new SUPER CUB 110 with disc brakes on March 14, the new CROSS CUB 110, which underwent a similar model change, was exhibited at the Osaka Motorcycle Show, bringing together the new CUB 110 models. Neither of these models has been officially announced but exhibited as planned production models.

The first thing that has been eye-catching about the new CROSS CUB 110 is its matte green coloring. This is a new outdoor-inspired color that was also used on the 2019 X-ADV model and is different from the camouflage green that has existed since the 2018 model year. The first matte color for the CROSS CUB is expected to be popular.

The 2 models are brothers based on the SUPER CUB 110 and share the same engine and frame platform. The 2022 model has an all-new engine and front and rear cast wheels. Both are also equipped with front disc brakes, but each has its own calipers.

These changes were made to comply with the 2020 emission regulations and the brake regulations that require ABS or front/rear interlocking.

New CROSS CUB 110 [HONDA] The 2022 model was exhibited as a planned production motorcycle. Cast wheels painted black and disc brakes with 2-pot calipers & ABS are the main features. A custom motorcycle was on display.

New SUPER CUB 110 [HONDA] This 2022 model was also exhibited as a planned production motorcycle. It is equipped with silver painted cast wheels, 1-pot caliper disc brakes and ABS.

Tires are tubeless, making puncture repair easy.

If it were simply a matter of complying with regulations, conventional spoked wheels and tube tires would have been fine, but the new CUB 110 series has cast holes and tubeless tires.

The new SUPER CUB 110 is equipped with IRC's NF63B/Y NR94L, the same tubeless tire that the SUPER CUB C125 was equipped with. The new CROSS CUB 110, like the previous model, is equipped with IRC's GP-5, but since this model is only available with tube tires, it is believed to be an improved tubeless version.

Incidentally, tubeless wheels also have the advantage of being able to mount the tube-spec CUB tires that have been available in the lineup to date if tubes are used. Tire sizes are 70/90-17 front and 80/90-17 rear for the CROSS CUB 110 and 80/90-17 front and rear for the CROSS CUB 110, which are the same sizes as the previous models.

The wheels have the same Y-shaped x 5-spoke design as the SUPER CUB C125, omitting the cutting process applied to the C125 and finishing the SUPER CUB 110 in silver paint and the CROSS CUB 110 in matte black paint.

The wheels are cast wheels with "FOR TUBELESS" engraved on it. The new CROSS CUB  110 is equipped with GP-5 semi-block tires and 2-pot calipers.

The new SUPER CUB 110 is equipped with OEM tires for the SUPER CUB C125 made by IRC. A one-pot caliper that does not hit too hard was probably selected in consideration of commuting.

The ABS used by the new CUB 110 series will be a front-only channel, so the rear will continue to use drum brakes while the cast wheels will be used.

Engine changed to all-new long-stroke specification

The engine of the new CUB 110 series appears to be the same as that of the new SUPER CUB released in Thailand. The Thai version has a 109.5cc engine with a 47.0mm bore x 63.1mm stroke and a 10:1 compression ratio. The current CUB 110 series has a 50.0mm x 55.6mm 109cc engine with a compression ratio of 9:1, so the new model has a much longer stroke and higher compression ratio.

In addition, low-friction technology has been incorporated to improve maximum torque from 0.87kg-m to 0.89kg-m while complying with 2020 exhaust gas regulations. In addition, fuel economy in the WMTC mode has been increased from 67 km/L to 67.9 km/L.

In terms of functionality, the kick pedal continues to be used to start the engine even when the battery is dead. The kick pedal also features a rubberized arm for ease of use. As is typical of the CUB series, the transmission is a 4-speed rotary type, but the gear ratios of the Thai version are completely different from those of the conventional model, so a change in driving feel is expected.

New engine for the new CUB 110 series. It is also deployed in the GROM (MSX-125), MONKEY 125, SUPER CUB C125, and new DAX 125, which have different engine displacements and clutch systems.

It can be seen that the appearance is completely different from the conventional model, such as the cylinder head cover with engraved fins. SP TAKEGAWA head side covers and KITACO engine sliders are installed.

This is the engine of the conventional CROSS CUB 110. The gear ratios are 1st gear: 2.615, 2nd gear: 1.555, 3rd gear: 1.136, and 4th gear: 0.916. The Thai version is shorter, with 1st gear: 3.143, 2nd gear: 1.833, 3rd gear: 1.333, and 4th gear: 1.071.

Gear positions are displayed on the LCD screens of both the CROSS CUB 110 and SUPER CUB 110 gauges

A welcome feature of the new CUB 110 series is the new speedometer. The STD CUB series finally adopted an LCD screen 64 years after its debut. In addition to fuel and distance gauges, it now displays a gear position indicator.

CUBS with rotary transmissions sometimes lose track of what gear they are in when they are stopped because they go straight up one gear while stopped, and it would be much easier to operate if the indicator showed what gear they are in.

The new SUPER CUB 110 is available in 5 colors: blue, green, beige, white, and yellow, with the previous Irvine Blue Metallic discontinued. The new CROSS CUB 110 comes in 3 colors: the new matte-armored green and pearl deep matte gray, plus the existing Puco Blue. The yellow, glossy green, and white colors have been discontinued. The Kumamon version of the new CROSS CUB 110 is also likely to continue.

Prices are expected to be 302,500 yen (approx.  2,451 USD) for the new SUPER CUB 110, 363,000 yen (approx. 2,941 USD) for the new CROSS CUB 110, and 374,000 yen (approx. 3,031 USD) for the Kumamon, all of which would be up 22,000 yen (approx. 178 USD). The official announcement is expected at the end of March.

New CROSS CUB 110 customized specifications

The new SUPER CUB 110 was already exhibited in customized versions. It combines SP TAKEGAWA and KITACO parts for the conventional CROSS CUB 110, but the exhaust system will be certified for the new engine. The box looks great!

The rear box installed on the new CROSS CUB 110 is JMS's Type 17 Special Cargo Box. It is STD item for CUB customization.

This is a scrambler exhaust system up-type from Special Parts TAKEGAWA. The rear suspension is made by KITACO, both of which are lined up for the conventional CROSS CUB 110.

The aluminum center carrier kit and airflow seat cover are also both parts of the SP TAKEGAWA lineup for the conventional CROSS CUB 110.
