While these bikes are fun to look at and to ride, there is another concern: theft of their beloved motorcycles.

At night, whether at home or on the road the rider must be away from the motorcycle. Will it be stolen? Will it be tampered with? The motorcycle is a very important part of the motorcycle's life.

A strong ally for such riders who love their motorcycles is the Monimoto7, a SIM-embedded anti-theft GPS smart tracker.

The Monimoto7 consists of the right body and keys, with the Monimoto body measuring 94 x 61 x 19 mm and weighing 95 g. The body is waterproof and dustproof so that it can be left on the bike.

Monimoto is an anti-theft item born in Scandinavia that was introduced in 2020, the second generation following the previous MM6, and this Monimoto7 is the latest model, imported to Japan by BalticVision Inc.

How does Monimoto 7 work?

Monimoto7 is a kind of smart tracker, the same as Apple's AirTag, that can be used with smartphones (iPhone/Android) to monitor the location of a beloved vehicle, and if there are suspicious vibrations or movement when away from the motorcycle, the system will send a phone call to the smartphone to notify the owner of the anomaly.

The main function of Monimoto7 is to notify the owner's smartphone of a crisis in his or her motorcycle, whether on the road or at home.

The system consists of a Monimoto unit installed on the bike and a Monimoto key that the owner carries with him or her. The system is extremely easy to use; once the batteries are inserted and the app is paired with a smartphone, all that is required is to carry the key.

Smart trackers are currently mostly simple items with only Bluetooth communication, but Monimoto's unique feature is that it incorporates a SIM. Unlike smart trackers that only use Bluetooth for short-range communication, Monimoto can function even when the bike and rider are far apart, as long as they are within range of a cellular phone signal.

How easy is it to use Monimoto 7?

I actually used the newest model, Monimoto7, and was impressed by how easy it is to operate and install, and if you have used Bluetooth devices that are paired with a smartphone before, you don't need any special wiring knowledge to use it.

Open the box and set up 2 dry cell batteries; the batteries in the body & keys of the Monimoto7 should last about a year.

Install the dedicated "Monimoto" application on your smartphone and follow the instructions in Japanese to pair the device.

The Monimoto unit is independently powered by batteries, so it can be placed under the seat of a motorcycle or in any other available space, and that's it. All that remains is for the rider to carry the Monimoto key on his/her person.

The Monimoto unit has a GPS sensor on the side with the Monimoto logo to capture location information from satellites, and it is installed so that the logo is facing the top or side of the bike.

Monimoto keys are small enough to be easily carried and are always carried with house keys, wallets, etc. Although it is tempting to attach it together with the motorcycle key, it is better to carry them separately considering their waterproof performance and the risk of the entire key being stolen.

The most important feature of Monimoto7 is that there is no need to operate any system activation switches. Just use the bike as usual.

If the Monimoto key and the Monimoto unit are close to each other, such as during a ride, the system will turn off, and if the rider dismounts and the Monimoto key in the rider's possession leaves the bike, the system will automatically activate.

If the system detects movement or vibration of the motorcycle by a suspicious person while the system is activated, it enters alarm mode and the Monimoto unit communicates with the rider to call the rider's smartphone to notify him or her of the abnormality.

When the system is in alarm mode during anomaly detection, it calls repeatedly every few minutes.

Their phone number is an overseas number, but it's always the same, so you can contact them and say, "Burglar Alert! Let's register it with a name such as

In alarm mode, the dedicated application also records the location of the Monimoto7 unit via GPS. In other words, is the bike moving? Is he or she not there? You can check where they are.

When we ran the motorcycle in alarm mode in anticipation of theft, we confirmed that the GPS recorded fairly accurate location information.

The "Events" section of the application records the connection status of the key & device, as well as its location when in alarm mode, and approximately every 5 minutes if it is moving.

The main unit (motorcycle) is at the left center of the screen, around Owase Shrine, and the key (rider) is at the right center of the screen, around Minshuku Yamaguchi. In fact, the location information is quite accurate, as it was tested on this road.

Monimoto 7 set-up points

The key to making good use of the Monimoto7 system lies in how the distance between the Monimoto unit and the Monimoto key is set depending on the residential environment. The system will not turn on until the Monimoto device "recognizes" that the rider is away from the Monimoto key (i.e., Bluetooth communication is cut off). For this reason, in addition to setting the sensitivity of the vibration sensor, the application has a menu for setting the distance from the Monimoto key, which can be set to "near," "medium," or "far" to suit the residential environment.

In actual use, it is easy to be recognized as being "far away" when entering a concrete room, while it is difficult to be recognized as being "far away" in a place with a clear line of sight. According to the announcement, the maximum detection distance in a clear area is about 50 meters.

The smartphone app allows the user to set the sensitivity of the detection and the distance to the key. Incidentally, the Monimoto key and Monimoto itself are connected via Bluetooth, and when the rider leaves the communication range, the system recognizes that the rider has moved away and turns on the system. When the rider moves closer and Bluetooth communication is restored, the system turns off.

What are the running costs of Monimoto 7?

Now, the Monimoto7 is convenient, but what is of concern is its price and lining cost. The list price is 26,999 yen, the purchase price of the unit, and although the first two months of use are free, after that, the SIM motorcycled usage fee for communication costs 49 US dollars (about 5600 yen) per year, or about 467 yen per month on a monthly basis for running costs. Well, if you are worried about bike theft, it seems cheap if you consider it as buying your daily peace of mind.

Payment, by the way, will be notified by the app before the SIM expires, and payment can be made within the app (credit motorcycled or Paypal), so there seems to be no hassle. Incidentally, if payment cannot be made by either of these methods, BalticVision can be used to make a payment on your behalf, although it will be a little more expensive.

Monimoto 7 is very versatile.

After actually using the Monimoto7, we felt that it could be used not only as an anti-theft measure for motorcycles but also for a variety of other items. Since there is no need for wiring or device registration, Monimoto7 can be used to protect a second bike or motorcycle by simply replacing it with the Monimoto unit. In other words, Monimoto7 can be used in different ways depending on the situation. Monimoto7 can also be used overseas as long as the smartphone has a good communication environment. It may be useful not only for motorcycles but also for suitcases to protect them from theft.

Keys are sold separately, and multiple keys can be paired to allow family members to ride bikes or scooters together without setting off the alarm, such as when sharing a bike or scooter.

The small size of the Monimoto7 makes it easy to install on a second bike with a smaller displacement, such as a 125cc bike. It is also useful as an anti-theft measure for vehicles and luggage that are susceptible to theft, such as motorcycles. The system is available in Europe, the U.S., Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and other countries, and requires a smartphone with a SIM compatible with that country.

The Monimoto7 requires two AA batteries for the main unit and a button cell battery (CR2450) for the key, and is designed to last about a year if the GPS and other functions are not constantly monitored. In addition, battery drain can be checked via an app, and the app's push notification will tell you when the battery drops below 20% so that you will never run out of battery power and not be able to function before you know it.

It is good that you can check the battery drain status of the key as well as the main unit in the app, so you don't have to worry about the battery running out before you know it and becoming useless ....... The battery life is about one year under normal use. The battery life is about a year for normal use and 3 to 4 months for frequent alarms.
