Roughly, there are two types of front forks: upright and inverted. Are upright forks not rigid? Does the frame bend when an inverted fork tumbles over? There are many urban legends about front forks, but in this article, I will discuss why the two types of forks are used together, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and more, as I have overhauled many different types of front forks and have ridden many different types in races.

Upright and inverted difference in structure

The construction of a front fork is broadly divided into an outer tube and an inner tube that moves up and down within the outer tube. The type with the outer tube on the lower side is called an upright type, and the type with the outer tube on the upper side is called an inverted type.

While the upright type has been common in the past, inverted front forks, which are upside-down versions of the upright type, are becoming more and more common. However, since the support for the front wheel and brake caliper no longer exists if the fork is simply inverted, a bottom case is provided at the bottom end of the inner tube.
