[Webike Vintage Bike Info] HONDA CB400FOUR’s 4-piece Sound and Engine Forward Lean Angle For a Majestic Ride!

Motorcycle & Industry

Based on the Super Four, the cylinder forward lean angle has been changed and the frame has been newly designed for a traditional sensibility with 4-exhausts!

In 1997, HONDA released the CB400FOUR with 4 exhaust system. Even though the CB400 Super Four had already debuted in 1992 and had already become a popular model and was leading the market, they added a traditional model with 4 exhaust systems based on the same engine.

HONDA released the CB400 Super Four in 1992, which quickly became a popular model and held the top market share. In 1997, the CB400 FOUR with 4 exhausts was introduced.

Speaking of 4-cylinders, many fans cannot forget the impact of the 4  exhaust systems symbolized by the CB750 Four, and the in-house development team was no exception.

The project started with the idea of giving shape to such a desire to ride a 4-cylinder with a traditional feel, rather than the latest 4-cylinder 400.

Although the engine is based on the CB400 Super Four, the 4 exhausts system will be meaningless unless the overall design of the vehicle, from the overall design to the driving feel, is set to give the imposing 4-cylinder of the 70's a sense of stability that is rooted to the road surface. The engine is not a 4-cylinder exhausts.

Therefore, the engine's cylinder forward lean angle was increased from 26° to 21°.

The front wheel load and leaning action of the engine gave the handling a sense of stability and slow turning, and a traditional ride quality was achieved. The angle of the engine was changed, and the carburetor angle and specifications were also changed to give the engine a longer intake length and a more responsive feel with more lag under control.

The 4 exhausts are completely independent and have no joints anywhere along the way, making it a 4-straight exhausts.

In addition, the inverted structure at the silencer part also has a sound that is like an old 4-cylinder, a resonant and pleasant CB400 FOUR sound that resonates when heard a little back based on the heavy bass, which stimulates the senses along with the exhaust pressure. It was a finish filled with such a sense of care.

The cylinder was deeply engraved with cooling fins, as if it were air-cooled, and the fuel tank was not connected to the side cover but stood out as an independent part, and the emblem was designed to stand out.

However, this maniacal difference was not well understood even after its release, and it was only understood as a change of mood with a 4-way exhaust.

The Super Four continued to gain momentum, and the CB400FOUR, with its unique atmosphere created by the 4 exhausts, was only diminishing in popularity.

Although there were still some ways to challenge the CB400FOUR, such as changing the graphics to the image of the first CB750FOUR, the 4 exhausts were doomed to disappear after only two seasons.
