[Webike Vintage Bike Info] The NSR50/80: A Symbols of HONDA’s Dominance to the Strongest 2-stroke Engine

Motorcycle & Industry

From GP machines to 50 replicas, which erased the memory of being the last 2-stroke machine!

In 1979, HONDA debuted a 2-stroke 50cc sport called MB50! This was a shocking event for motorcycle fans who had never expected a 2-stroke product from HONDA, which until then had always used 4-strokes, even for small-displacement machines, from GP machines to Super Cubs. However, in 1982, HONDA introduced its first 2-stroke, 3-cylinder machine, the NS500, for the World GP, and new 250cc replica models were introduced at the same speed as the evolution of the GP machines, and HONDA 2-strokes, as you know, kicked rivals to the curb.

The 50 cc model finally reached the 12-inch category, a category that is a playful and fun model for adults, with the “fighting power” of a scaled-down version of the real NSR250, and even in the 12-inch fighting races that were becoming fashionable, they completely shut out their rivals.

The engine is a liquid-cooled 2-stroke single-cylinder 49cc (39mm x 41.4mm) with piston reed valve intake, aluminum radiator, and single-shaft balancer drive for high rpm. With output of 7.2 PS at 10,000 rpm, which is at the upper limit of the voluntary regulation, front and rear disc brakes, and full suspension, this machine is so agile that existing 12-inch replicas are quickly overtaken by it.

Due to differences in speed limits on public roads, many riders rode the NSR80, whose displacement was increased to 79 cc. In 1989, the motorcycle was remodeled to “race-winning” specifications, with a slanted cowl, an extended chamber (exhaust) tail, and full-fledged suspension damping, as was typical of HONDA. In 1993, the six-spoke engine was strengthened for higher rpm range, and in 1995, the seat cowl shape was changed to resemble the latest NSR250R, and every part of the machine was revised to its most powerful level. It is unforgettable that each generation continued to follow the strongest NSR250 of the time in coloring and graphics. Thus, for more than 12 years, the NSR250 maintained its position as the absolute leader in the 12-inch category.
