New YZF-R7 to be Officially Announced on May 18! Appearance Similar to YZF-R6 Revealed!

Motorcycle & Industry

From the background and the letters on the motorcycle, the name was confirmed as R7. According to the information, the name seems to be YZF-R7.

After releasing teaser videos in the U.S. and in Europe revealing partial information, Yamaha has announced the official launch at 9:00 a.m. (North America) and 3:00 p.m. (Europe) on May 18. The full pricing and specs will be revealed then, but before that, the styling of the new YZF-R7 has been revealed. As rumored, it looks exactly like the YZF-R6, which underwent a model change in 2018. And on the inside, it looks like it's definitely an MT-07 from the swingarm and exhaust system equipment.

2021 MT-07 monocular LED headlamps installed in the ducts

The appearance of the new YZF-R7, which was revealed before the official announcement, is based on the style of the YZF-R6, which according to information was discontinued in 2020, and has been converted to the MT-07. The new R7 is unique in that it has a monocular LED headlamp embedded in the duct. By placing the bi-functional LED headlamps that are new to the 2021 MT-07 without ram air supercharging, the company seems to be making effective use of space and also creating cost benefits through common parts.

The new R7 has the headlights in the center and the position lights on the left and right; the R6 had two headlights on each side.

The upper and tail cowls appear to have been used almost directly on the new R7.

The new MT-07 model changed in 2021, with an engine that complies with exhaust gas regulations and a maximum output of 73% of the European specification..4PS/8750 rpm.

The upside down fork, not found on the MT-07, makes for a sportier ride

Since the new YZF-R7 is based on the MT-07, it was expected that the suspension would be the same as the MT-07, but it turns out that the front suspension uses inverted forks. Compared to an upright fork, an upside down fork has higher rigidity and an advantage when braking, making it a must-have for supersport riders. This means that the new R7 is definitely more sporty than the MT-07, and combined with the forward leaning position of the separate handlebars, it's likely to deliver high cornering performance.

The handlebar position is a separate type under the top bridge, and the position is sporty. The inverted fork appears to be a fully adjustable type.

In addition, the front brake uses radial mount calipers for enhanced braking power. This is not just a full cowl version of the MT-07, and we can expect a sporty finish that is typical of the YZF-R series. On the other hand, all of Yamaha's two-cylinder 688cc engine series, such as the Ténéré 700, do not use electronic controls such as Traction Control, so the new R7 is not likely to use them either.

The brakes on the new R7 are double discs with radial mount calipers, and if they were the same as the R6, they would be 320mm in diameter.

Launch in Japan is likely to be at the end of 2021, with a price of around 1 million yen.

The new YZF-R7 will first be officially announced in North America and Europe on May 18, and then released locally. It is expected to be released in Japan at the end of the year. Before that, the new 2021 MT-07, which will be the base model, will be announced in June and released in the summer, and then it will be rolled out. In addition, Yamaha's new 3-cylinder MT-09 and Tracer 9, which have not yet been released in Japan for the 2021 model year, are also expected in the summer, as is the case with the MT-07.Expect Yamaha to make great strides in the second half of 2021.

The blinkers on the new R7 will be horizontal LED type. Is it sequential?

The new R7's tail lights feature the same vertical arrangement as the R6

Single seat cover also seems to be an option

The engine is expected to be a parallel two-cylinder 688cc. A supersport with just the right amount of power, size and weight.

This is the original YZF-R7 released in 1999, a race-based model limited to 500 units worldwide, and a serious circuit model with a personality 180 degrees different from the new R7.
