Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. will release a fully redesigned road-sport model, the "MT-09 ABS", on August 26. The company will also release the higher grade "MT-09 SP ABS "* on July 28.
The MT-09ABS has been developed under the concept of "TheRodeoMaster", which inherits and evolves the "Torque&Agile" character of the previous models and brings "Feeling" to the rider. The concept of the MT-09ABS is "TheRodeoMaster". The engine and bodywork have been completely redesigned, while weight-saving technologies have been incorporated throughout, resulting in a weight reduction of approximately 4kg compared to the previous model.
The new features include: 1) a new, torque 888cm3CP3 engine; 2) a new lightweight CF die-cast aluminium frame with a minimum wall thickness of 1.7mm; 3) lightweight aluminium wheels with unique SPINFORGEDWHEEL technology; 4) a sound design that expresses torque and acceleration; 5) a range of controls to assist the driver using the new IMU; and 6) a new body design that stimulates the senses. design, 5) various controls to support driving operation using the new IMU, and 6) a new body design that stimulates the senses.
The MT-09SPABS is based on the MT-09ABS and features enhanced performance and quality with Öhlins rear suspension, double-stitched seats and a painted tank.

New features for the 2021 model year
1) New 888cm3CP3 engine with full torque
"The 888cm3CP3 (three-cylinder of the cross-plane concept) engine, developed on the basis of the "cross-plane concept "*1, has an increased displacement of 78.0 mm x 62.0 mm (bore and stroke) and a compression ratio of 11.5:1, resulting in excellent torque and power characteristics.
The pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, crankcase and many other key components have been redesigned to reduce weight. The fuel supply system has also been redesigned. The injectors have been relocated from the cylinder head to the throttle valve side. The injectors are now located on the throttle valve side, instead of directly at the cylinder head, and the injection is now directed behind the valve umbrella for better combustion efficiency. These improvements in combustion and weight reduction have also resulted in improved fuel economy.
*1 The crossplane concept is a design concept that minimizes inertial torque and allows only the combustion torque produced by the combustion chamber to be extracted efficiently.
2) New lightweight CF aluminium die-cast frame with a minimum wall thickness of 1.7mm
Lightweight aluminium frame with a minimum wall thickness of 1.7 mm (previously 3.5 mm) thanks to the latest CF aluminium die-casting technology. The engine mounting angle has been raised from 47.5° to 52.3° to make it more compact and optimize dimensions.
The balance of longitudinal, lateral, and torsional rigidity has been adjusted to achieve both straight-line stability and maneuverability, and the lateral rigidity, in particular, has been increased by 50% compared with the previous model, contributing to straight-line stability. In addition, the head pipe has been lowered by 30mm compared to the previous model, making it easier to apply the front load and contributing to a better front contact feeling when turning.
The box construction of the rear arm, with its welded aluminum panels, is both rigid and lightweight. The pivot connection is now supported by the frame from the outside of the rear arm. This, together with the stiffness tuning and the shape of the seat surround, gives excellent straight-line and cornering stability while maintaining a slim feel.
The rear frame is also made from die-cast CF aluminum, reducing the combined weight of the frame and rear arm by 2.3kg and refining the agile riding feel.
3) Lightweight aluminum wheels with unique SPINFORGED WHEEL technology
Yamaha's unique "SPINFORGEDWHEEL" technology, which achieves a balance of strength and toughness comparable to that of a forged wheel despite being a cast wheel, was developed by developing Yamaha's original aluminum material and establishing a manufacturing method. This is the first time Yamaha's proprietary "SPINFORGEDWHEEL" technology has been used in a lightweight wheel. The new wheel is approximately 700g lighter front and rear than the previous model, and in addition, the rear moment of inertia has been reduced by 11%, contributing to agile athletic performance.
4) Sound design that expresses a sense of torque and acceleration
"The quality of the exhaust and intake sound" is an important factor contributing to the 'ride quality', so we have designed and tuned both the exhaust and intake to give a sense of torque and acceleration.
The 1.5-stage expansion chamber silencer and symmetrical tailpipes give the rider a sense of torque at the start, with the exhaust sound synchronized to the rear-drive power, and a switchable sound when the throttle is opened. As the revs rise, the main sound source to the rider switches from the exhaust to the intake.
The intake sound is produced by three intake ducts of different cross-sectional area and length, each resonating at a different frequency, and the sound pressure is tuned to accentuate the sound at mid to high revs, creating a pleasing acceleration feel.
(5) Various controls to support driving operations using the new IMU
Equipped with a newly developed "IMU" (Inertial Measurement Unit), the new model maintains the basic performance of the IMU proven in the 2015 and later models of the YZF-R1, while reviewing the sensor configuration to achieve a 50% reduction in size and 40% reduction in weight.
Information from the IMU is transferred to the ECU (Engine Control Unit), which controls the engine output, and the HU (Hydraulic Unit), which controls the brake hydraulics. The individual controls work in conjunction with each other to support the driving operation and bring out the potential of the machine efficiently. For each system, the intervention level can be adjusted and set to ON or OFF. "The feature of this system is natural control that matches the characteristics of the Torque & Agile model.
6) New body design that stimulates the senses
The new styling expresses its potential, which has evolved significantly as the third generation succeeds the first generation in 2014 and the second generation in 2017.
The styling of the air intakes and the front wing, which directs the wind into the air intakes, is based on a theme that evokes sound, such as the "flow" of air and the "waves" of sound. The headlamps, silencers and other parts are condensed around the engine to express a strong sense of torque. In addition to the smooth top line and short overhang silhouette that has been inherited from the first generation, the zero-cover molding that reduces the number of covers as much as possible creates an attractive structure. In addition to the "image of being able to handle the motorcycle at the rider's will" that has been inherited from the first generation, the zero-cover molding that reduces the number of covers as much as possible makes the structure more attractive.
In addition, the bi-functional LED headlamps (HiLo integrated), which combine compactness and design with excellent illumination, are adopted. The contrast between the area of illumination and the area outside the area of illumination is gentle and soft, and the light distribution is even. The position lamps are also LED type with light guides, giving the impression of a new MT face.
