From the Webike Community's My Bike, the "Owner Review Summary" introduces various motorcycles based on the voices of owners who actually ride or have ridden them. This time, here's what the owners have to say about Suzuki「Burgman 400 ABS」.
To be honest, Suzuki "Burgman 400 ABS" is this kind of bike!
For riders who have been riding motorcycles since the 2000s, the Burgman 400 ABS is probably more familiar as "the Skywave 400 renamed. In the past, Suzuki's big scooter brand in Japan was the Skywave series, which was a major force with a lineup of 250, 400, and 650 models, but the market shrank with the end of the big scooter boom.
The Skywave 400 will be renamed to the Burgman, the street name of the international version, starting in 2017. So, although the name is different, the Burgman 400 ABS is the direct successor to the Skywave 400.
The Skywave 400 went on sale in 1998 amid the big scooter boom that swept the country from the late 1990s to the 2000s. In order to differentiate itself from its rivals at the time, the Skywave series boasted high running performance. At the time of its debut, the front tire diameter was 13 inches, much smaller than today's 15 inches, but the link-type mono-shock and front double disc brake were features that gave a sense of performance, and these features have been carried over to the current Burgman 400 ABS.
The interesting thing about the Burgman 400 is that it is a model that has survived from the beginning of the big scooter boom to its peak and through its demise. The Burgman 400 has a history of more than 20 years, including the Skywave era, and there are a great many of them on the used motorcycle market. The major points of the model change are the transition from 13- to 14- to 15-inch diameter front wheels and the change to DOHC. When selecting a used motorcycle, it is a good idea to take these points of model change into consideration.

It should be noted that the motorcycle received more than 4 points for looks, riding, and cargo capacity. The smart looks, the engine that can handle high-speed cruising, and the luggage space with a capacity of 42 L seem to be the key points of a high evaluation.
On the other hand, some owners gave low marks to maintainability, citing the belt drive as a strong point that requires little maintenance.

Burgman 400 ABS: Owner's Review
Here are some of the most impressive voices among the many reviews.

Motive for purchase, intended use, and comparative models | As I reached the age of my first year, I switched from the GSX-S750 to a luxurious scooter type. |
---|---|
Advantages/Satisfactory points | Although it is a heavy scooter, it has a low center of gravity and is very stable and nimble once started. I think it has more margin for highway cruising, uphill, and overtaking acceleration than a 250-class scooter. The maximum speed does not seem to be much, though, does it? |
Disadvantages/Dissatisfactory points | It has a 400cc displacement, but I would like to see more power! Fuel economy is about 27/L if you drive with the eco mark light on. |
Advice for prospective buyers | December 08, 2022. I'm just starting to operate it, so I'm going to ride it and check it out. I think the seat opener is a little unstable. |

Motive for purchase, intended use, and comparative models | We selected bikes that are suitable for touring and require less frequent maintenance. |
---|---|
Advantages/Satisfactory points | Good foot grounding. A thick seat cushion prevents the buttocks from getting sore. No need to operate the clutch. Large space under the seat. The belt drive system requires less maintenance. Rare motorcycle, so there is no need to buy the same motorcycle. |
Disadvantages/Dissatisfactory points | Slow response of automatic centrifugal clutch. Slightly underpowered for the sound. Overall length is long. The vertical air valve is difficult to operate. The front accessory compartment is not lockable. Few tires can be installed. |

Motive for purchase, intended use, and comparative models | I wanted to ride a bike with an automatic windshield. I bought my first scooter. I am puzzled by the CVT. |
---|---|
Advantages/Satisfactory points | Good foot grounding. Fairly fast. High ridingstability. - It is comfortable at all times without any elements that make me feel uneasy. - I can tour around in a very relaxed manner. Rather sporty. |
Disadvantages/Dissatisfactory points | I want a smart key. Met-in space is not as big as expected. The suspension feels surprisingly stiff when there are gaps in the road, etc. The wind blows hard against my head and shoulders (noisy wind). The sound quality of the engine and exhaust system is not so good. |
Advice for prospective buyers | It is 400cc so it is a little big and heavy for a scooter. I don't feel any inconvenience while riding. It is a little heavy to push and pull after getting off the bike. It is very stable and easy to ride. It is a bit like a motorcycle because it is very stable and easy to ride. However, it is not very fast and there is little sense of tension, so even if you ride hard, it still feels a little unsatisfying. It is for leisurely touring, right? |
Check out Burgman 400 ABS's competitors
At the height of the big scooter boom, there were competing 400cc class big scooters, such as Honda's Silver Wing 400 and Yamaha's Grand Majesty 400, but currently, the only 400cc class big scooter among the four Japanese manufacturers is the Suzuki Burgman 400 ABS is the only big scooter in the 400 cc class among the four Japanese manufacturers.
The only CVT-type automatic scooter in the same displacement range is Yamaha's Tricity 300, but it uses Yamaha's unique LMW (Leaning Multi-Wheel) front two-wheel structure, so it is difficult to say that it is a direct competitor. Looking at overseas manufacturers, BMW has two scooter models in its lineup, the C400 X and the C400 GT, both equipped with 349cc engines.
