Motorcycles and self-introduction
[Self-introduction]
I've been riding motorcycles for a really long time. I've been riding motorcycles for decades because I'm past my 60th birthday. With the increasing number of motorcycle accidents involving middle-aged and older people, I believe it is important to ride a motorcycle that is appropriate for your fitness. That's why we've been downsizing one after another in recent years.
[Motorcycles]
I bought the MT-07 because of its lightweight, which was the most important factor for me. The seat height is a little high, so we incorporated a Hyper Pro lowering kit. The footing is better than the CBR250R and it's unbeatable.
However, the MT-07 is a motorcycle that was designed with Yamaha's signature design in mind, so design is a priority. This is most evident in the rear of the motorcycle. The mudguards are as good as gone. If you ride on a dirty road, the muddy water will hit the rear shock.
The drive chain cover and other parts are short and even after servicing the drive chain and wiping the oil off well, the oil splatters badly. The bad thing is that the oil stains get on the part of the body holder attached to the bottom of the rear seat.
After taking the motorcycle around, I get oil stains on my fingers and gloves on my right hand. I wondered what it was, but it turned out to be oil from the drive chain flying up here.
I'm going to do something about it.
Customization of the particulars
[Direction to aim for]
My MT-07 is mainly used for touring. This customization is to solve the problem of dirt.
[Performance points that have changed]
When I went touring and encountered a road under construction, the MT-07 looked miserable with a lot of mud, but now it's a little better. It was especially nice not to get muddy water on the rear shocks and no more oil on my fingers.
Custom Points
Some touring destinations have road construction and dirty roads. I don't want muddy water hitting the rear shocks, for functionality reasons. It's also not good to get chain oil on your gloves. I want to prioritize comfort when touring, even if I have to sacrifice some appearance. The image shows the mudguard at the rear of the rear shock. The stock shocks are recessed in the center, and the muddy water that flies through the gap directly attacks the rear shocks.
Therefore, a mudguard is added to cover this recess. It's not that difficult to make. Remove the mudguard and attach the cut plastic plate with adhesive tape. Since there are many kinds of adhesive tapes these days and the adhesive strength is strong, it is not necessary to bolt such lightweight parts. The adhesive tape should be double-sided adhesive and made by a manufacturer such as 3M. When the motorcycle is dirty like this, the mud will splash on the rear shock, but thanks to the mudguard, it won't splash on the rear shock.
Next up is the drive chain cover, which even gets your hands dirty.
Yamaha thought this was a bad idea, so they changed to a longer drive chain cover for the later models. If you want to get the style, you can order the OEM parts. The stock part number is B4C-21650-00. If we can find the part number. If you know the parts number, you can order it from Webike. You don't have to pay a lot of money, but you can prevent grease and oil splashes by adding a small flap-like the one in the picture. All you have to do is cut and bend a thin plastic sheet that can be bent, and attach it with double-sided tape. In my case, I used aluminum bolts and nuts in addition to the double-sided tape.
If I can prevent mud splatter in the rear, I want to do the front too. There are many retrofit parts. For example, you can find "front fender extensions" on Webike for less than 5000 yen.
If you are dexterous, I recommend you to make it by using the resin board which is easy to bend. If style is important to you, buy the parts.
