Honda 400X Review

I will introduce "Owner Review Summary", a collection of reviews based on the voices of owners who have actually ridden various motorcycles from the Webike Community's My Bike. In this article, we bring you the real voice of the owner about the "400X"!

This is what the 400X is!

Launched in 2013, it has undergone one product improvement and is now in its second generation since 2019. 400X is the model which shares the engine and body with SS CBR400R and naked CB400F (now discontinued). Therefore, it has high sportiness as ADV. The engine has a good mix of torque in the low and mid-range and power in the high rpm range, so it responds to the accelerator pedal without complaint in any situation and is very easy to handle.

By the way, there is also a 500cc (for overseas) at the top of this series. Some people may not have a good impression of the series because of the variation in displacement and models, but that is a big mistake. Development was originally done on the 400cc model, so it is not a hand-me-down. Also, since it is a new development, the cost is not cheap. By developing it globally and for multiple models, we are able to reduce the price of the vehicle. This sharing of the body and the engine is not a bad thing because Mercedes Benz, BMW and Porsche do it as a matter of course.

Starting in 2019, the 400X shares the same engine and framework as the original 400R, but the styling has been revamped to make it hard to believe they're siblings. The big change is a 19-inch front tire. The larger diameter of the front tire increases the motorcycle's straight-line stability and enhances its ability to handle rough roads. In addition, the riding posture is automatically adjusted to the upright position, which increases comfort. The sport performance is high, and it has the functionality of ADV.

The evaluation of 400X is that it is easy to drive long-distance including expressway. In addition, because the engine itself is 400cc, the fuel consumption performance is also highly evaluated. The average speed seems to be kept high because the body is shared with sports motorcycles. In addition, it seems that many users enjoy flat dirt roads on the new model, and I think that the manufacturer's aim has been well conveyed to users.

On the other hand, the disadvantages are that the light intensity is low, the number of protective parts such as undercover should be increased. The maintenance is poor and the price is high. However, there are no shortcomings in the fundamental parts. In general, we can say that the degree of completion is high.

The 400X has a compact body and the performance is as good as the top models. The latest model has a much higher quality, so it is a good choice for downsizing from a large motorcycle. It is the best performance that is not indispensable for the motorcycle that excels in mobility.

A quick summary of the 400X

Advantage

- Fuel economy that does not fall below 30km/h and the resulting long cruising range.
- The upright riding posture makes long-distance driving easy.
- It can't be driven on rough roads, but it can be driven on forest roads and flat dirt roads.
- Good style and a sense of ownership.

Disadvantage

- High body price
- I want a manufacturer's option for protective parts such as engine guards.
- Difficult to detach the seat

Foot grounding

Approximately 80% of riders in the 166-170cm height range report that the 400X has a "heel lift" feel to it.

400X owner's voice

Mr. Kj

Purpose of purchase, purpose of use, comparative modelsI am mainly a day tourer, and I was looking for a motorcycle that is not stressful and not tiring, so I decided to go for the 400X after comparing the 250cc V-stroke and the G310GS.
The V-stroke was easy to ride, but it was stressful because it was 250cc.
The G310GS was too peculiar for me, and I was disappointed by the poor attitude of the sales staff.
Strengths/Satisfactory pointsI can ride for 300km without getting tired.
Fuel economy of 30 liters is the norm.
If you turn it, it rides surprisingly well.
Weaknesses and complaintsIt is not suitable for aggressive driving.
It can be ridden on flat dirt, if you are scared. (There is also a problem with my arms.)
There is nothing to complain about.
Advice to prospective buyers.Isn't it perfect for day touring?
I don't want to attach panniers, so I'm using side bags, but I think that if you attach panniers, you can use it for overnight stays and camping.
The oil hose bolt was not tightened properly. I'm not a fan of panniers, so I use side bags.

Mr. Kaifu

Purpose of purchase, purpose of use, comparative modelsMy son got his regular motorcycle license and I got back on the road after a year off. I was looking for a motorcycle that was more comfortable to ride than the sports tourer riding position I had been using, and I was looking for a used motorcycle of this type.
And I'm in love with this color and style.
I travel and camp with it, mostly solo or touring with my son.
Strengths/Satisfactory pointsCompared to the ZZR I used to ride, the riding position and the handling of the motorcycle when it is stationary is very easy.
I don't see many people riding it (or is it not popular?). I think that is one of its advantages.
The fuel consumption is very good, so if you don't drive too hard, you can usually ride more than 30km/1L, and you can ride more than 500km round trip without refueling.
Even if it doesn't have the performance of an off-road motorcycle, it can be ridden well on unpaved forest roads and mountain roads, which makes it fun to ride.
Weaknesses and complaintsI have no complaints. If I had to pick, I would say that there is no shift position indicator, and the LED headlights are too dark to see well outside of the light range. It is very dark in front of the light range and outside of the light range in the tunnel and the night road.
So I would recommend an auxiliary light.
Advice to prospective buyersIt is surprisingly easy to tweak when installing and wiring the drive recorder and electrical parts. Also, you can use not only the exclusive parts but also the parts of overseas model CB500X or CBR400R, so you can enjoy a little differentiation.

Mr. Clock

Purpose of purchase, purpose of use, comparative modelsMeans of transportation for work + hobby (touring)
Strengths/Satisfactory points(1) No fatigue after a long ride, whether at a fast pace or slowly.
(2) Good fuel economy! Consistently exceeds 30km/L on ordinary roads, mountain passes, and forest roads.
(3) The 17-liter fuel tank contributes greatly to safety! And it's regular fuel!
(4) When driving, you don't feel the 200kg weight of the vehicle, but it's hard to maneuver when pushing by hand and on forest roads.
(5) The 46 horsepower, 3.8 kgf-m engine is tenacious from low rpm. It also has dashing power when revved.
(6) It can take a deep bank angle, so it may be quite fast on mountain passes.
(7) It can cruise at 120km/h on the highway with ease and is easy to pass.
(8) Even though it's a 2014 model, it doesn't look old.
Weaknesses and complaintsIt's annoying to have to remove the cover and cowl every single time to do general maintenance.
Especially the coolant management is troublesome. Hexagon wrench is indispensable to remove the side cover even when you fill it from the reservoir using a tool when supplying water.
The full water supply from the radiator cap after blowing, for example, cannot be reached without taking out the screws in seven places. Probably difficult when outdoors.
A hexagon wrench and especially a plus screwdriver are essential. This is the only concern for forest road touring.
Advice to prospective buyers.(1) Even if you haven't driven a distance, there are very rare gymkhana use vehicles, so be sure to check the current vehicle!
(2)If you are thinking mainly of forest road and long distance touring, please be sure to ask the shop staff about the simple maintenance method of water and oil supply. There are unexpected troublesome things lurking.
(3) I recommend you to install (or retrofit) an engine guard. It makes a nice accent.
(4) As for the center stand, it is missing from the factory before 2017 model. There is not even a used one on the market, so if you need one, I guess you need one with a center stand.
(5) You should have the store do the retrofitting of the electrical system (ETC/USB/fog lights, etc., etc.). It's a hassle because of the cowl and other issues .
