DIY! How to Repair the Stripped Screw Hole! Here are the Countermeasure and Useful Tools

How to

The rearview mirror is often removed when the motorcycle is loaded into the transporter, and adjusted from usual. Have you ever experienced the fact that trying to forcibly remove the rearview mirror without loosening the lock nut it caused the screw thread to break and the rearview mirror that was being screwed in was rattling?

I will give the tips on how to repair the thread of the rearview mirror holder!

Certainly, if you remove the mirror and work, on the other hand, workbench and a vise are essential items. However, the work progresses with the surrounding curing masking while the parts are attached to the handle.

1. Kit is a more convenient.

The recoil used this time is M10 P1.25, which is a thread size of the rearview mirror. This means that the bolt diameter is 10mm and the distance of the pitch of the thread is 1.25mm. The 10mm screws used on motorcycles are 1.25mm pitch is often used except for the specific part.

To repair the indicated size screw thread, the necessary tools are kitted and sold. Certainly, if the stock of the inserted recoil is gone, only the recoil kit can be purchased. Usually, the recoil included in the kit is 1.5D, which is 1.5 times deeper of the screw diameter.

For kit products, it is 1.5 times longer than the screw thickness and it contains 1.5D recoil (about 15mm screw depth when inserted). There are 1.0D and 0.5D products sold separately, so if the screw hole is shallow, buy the small kit if you want to recoil it to a thin plate.

If you want to insert it in a thin plate, 0.5D is also available.

There various ways to repair screw threads.

Other than the recoil introduced here, there are also some products that almost the same type. The good thing about recoil kit is that it has better workability compared to other products with simple related tools.

Today, many tool shops are actively dealing with this kind of tools. Recoil, which can be used flexibly in various situations is convenient, and there is a repair tool that inserts the entire screw seat instead of inserting a spring-like repair coil like the recoil kit.

If the screw hole is shallow or you want to recoil to a thin plate, buy a short product

POINT

・Recoil is the most stable and durable method of screw thread regeneration.
・Although it was used because it was easy, its durability was weak, and sometimes it became troublesome later.
・For places where screw strength is required, it is better to take permanent measures from the beginning!

2. Actual work procedure

Use the electric hand drill to drill a pilot hole (10.25 mm) included in the kit to remove the loosened threads. Before working, secure the surrounding area not to get dirty with chips, protect the surroundings with masking tape.

When working with the drill, it is difficult to fail when you work with someone that can be asked to check (the pilot hole does not become oblique) in fall back and forth, while checking the left and right of the drill by yourself. Pay attention to the vertical angle of the hand tap.

Follow the straight drill hole, press and turn while tapping straight to create a screw thread. Immediately after work of hand tapping, it looks like this.

If you work in a hurry, chips from drill and hand tap will hinder you from inserting the recoil. Cleaning the inside of the screw hole is important when preparing in advance. The air blower was used, but it may be washed off with a parts cleaner.

I used the recoil kit of 1.5D size that is included in the commercial kit. The portion where the tip is broken, as caught in the protruding part of the recoil (turn by using the hook), to adjust the stopper of the insertion jig.

In the inlet part, press the recoil into the hole, start to enter the thread smoothly, and then slowly turn without pushing. When the end part enters from the end face, cut the edge with the included stick.

The edge break by tapping the bent part of the recoil using the slapping rod that is included in the kit. Be sure to remove broken edge fragments by sucking them into the magnet at the tip of the tapping rod.

POINT

・Before inserting recoil, be sure to clean the work area.
・If the area is dirty, it is not possible to insert the recoil kit smoothly.
・After insertion, be sure to cut and remove the edges.

3. Do not insert too much or too little

The left photo is an insufficient recoil insertion and the right photo is the one with recoil properly inserted.

When the recoil end is popping out as shown on the left, try to insert by turning it a little more. When it is already in the bottomed, pinch the part that pops out by pliers, pulls out the recoil, cut the overt part of the recoil end, and then try to reinsert.

POINT

・Insert a new pile of threads so that the recoil end sinks.
・When the recoil is bottomed and does not enter to the end, after counting the number of turns that do not enter, pull out the recoil with pliers (pull out to stretch the spring).
・Try to insert again after cutting the part that does not fit in beforehand.
