BMW's Motorcycle of the Future
BMW Motorrad presented a concept model for the future, 30 years from now. The concept model is based on a mobility that is expected to expand its diversity. This concept model is a part of the company's future vision which is focused on the coming 100 years.
The theme of the "BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100", exhibited at the "Iconic Impulses. The BMW Group Future Experience" exhibition held on the 11th October at Los Angeles was "The Great Escape".
"By riding a motorcycle you can escape from daily routines." quoted chief designer Edgar Heinrich. He says the NEXT 100 will offer an ultimate riding experience. Helmet and protector jackets won't be required. The rider will be able to enjoy direct contact with the wind, nature and other aspects enjoying the performance that the machine offers.
The design of NEXT 100 was accomplished from the aim to combine the rider and the machine which is an essential quality for motorcycles. To identify it as a BMW, the concept model features a traditional triangular black frame with white lines and classical boxer engine (Flat Twin Engine).
It is a true homage to the R32 which was the first motorcycle manufactured by BMWin 1923.
The body of the machine features a unique frame called "Flexframe" which has flexibility compared to frames mounted to current motorcycles. Steering is unnecessary, instead the frame functions steering ability itself and will turn on demand. The frame also offers effects equivalent to full fairings and prevent the wind.
I'm sure you're anxious to know about the power source. Well, they seem to be thinking of using an electric motor called a "Zero Mission Drive Unit". It features a structure similar to the BMW Boxer Engine which will fold compactly when the vehicle is parked. The blocks that arch out on both sides when the machine is travelling will function as protectors as well.

The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100
The most special feature of this future model is that it won't fall. The NEXT 100 is capable of "autonomous control" due to sensor, computer and gyro motor. In other words, the machine is mounted with mechanism to stand on its own.
By mounting a large flywheel, it will keep its balance even when the rider faces an accident.
The special visor is installed with Head Up Display (HUD) function which can project various traffic information to prevent accidents before hand.
The special riding suit is a part of the system and will automatically correspond to weather with heating and cooling functions and completes the image of the motorcycle of the future.
The NEXT 100 is a concept model and it is not clear when it will be revealed, however it is positive that the technology used for this future model is evolved from current technology. I hope one day we'll be able to see the dream machine of the future.
