KAWASAKI will release an all-new dual sport off-road model [KLX230] and a competition model [KLX230R] after a long time. I would like to inform you the goal of this newly-developed model since it was announced to the media before the releasing schedule in Japan this coming October 15th.
Since the end production of the KLX250 in 2016, the new model that off-road fans have been waiting was announced. KLX230 is an all-new dual sport model which is developed with a "lightweight and powerful off-road sports model that anyone can enjoy" concept.
The engine and the frame have been completely redesigned for a full-fledged off-road riding. The most attractive feature of air-cooled 4-stroke single-cylinder SOHC2 valve 232cc engine, which exhibits the maximum output power of 19ps, is the strong torque in the low and medium rev range. The compact perimeter frame, which is derived from the test ride under various conditions provides excellent handling stability on off-road.
The 230 has a slim and aggressive design with improved control performance based on the ergonomics inherited from the Racer KX series, and full-fledged 21 / 18-inch wheels. The adoption of dual-purpose ABS, which was the first time for KAWASAKI, is also remarkable.
The following conversation is the summary of the Q & A between the KAWASAKI Development Team and the media. You will know the concept of the new machine of KAWASAKI.
Q:Why did you choose 230cc instead of 250cc? And why air-cooled engine?
A:KLX230 is not a model which aimed the top of off-road model. It is way different from KLX250. It is the result of emphasized more on lightweight and compact body, convenience, and comfort for off-road fan riding. The engine is made considering the ease of maintenance and high reliability with a simple air-cooled 2-valve SOHC layout.
Q:Which was the first development? The street model or "R"?
A: R was first. If considering the running performance, the street model can be efficiently developed by developing first a competition model and confirming its performance.
Q:I'm concerned about the seat height with 885mm. Will the 230 be a rival of the SEROW famous for low seat?
A:The seat height became high because off-road performance was emphasized. But you will notice that it is not so high if you straddle it. It is the result to pursue its overall balance and fun in off-road riding. We are not aware of the SEROW.
Q:I think the "R" is an aspirational model, but I think it will be a niche model in Japan.
A:We are considering the US and South American fan rides as the main market. We wanted to develop a model that would make it easier for customers who want to ride the KX but can not buy. We want to make that happen in Japan as well.
Q:Is there any possibility that this family would expand to 125cc, 400cc, and 600cc?
A:We cannot answer at this time, but there is also an adventure boom, so we want to look for the answer by looking at the reaction of this model in the market.
Q:What are the differences in concept and positioning with the KLX250 model?
A:First, the price stage is different. The KLX230 with ABS is 4,899 USD in regard to 5,399 USD for the KLX250. At the same time, the lightness of handling is different. The wheelbase is 60mm shorter compared to the 250. The 230 stands between 150 and 250. In addition, its riding position is also a modern setting to make it flat. We created a machine that can use both on-roads or off-road with a single setting. We want the riders to feel its size, lightness, balance, and ease of riding. KLX250 is a high rev model while KLX230 is a low to medium rev model. The 230 engine was finished to be an excellent engine with a good engine response, unlike KAWASAKI (lol).
Q:What are your expected usage and situations of the 230?
A: It should be able to play an active role as a commuter for riding on the streets as well as in off-road courses and touring. With regards to the off-road performance, its specification can be enjoyed from trekking to a slightly higher speed off-roads. Its ABS has been set to prevent interruption as much as possible.
Q:What was the reason the 230 developed?
A:Off-road motorcycles are booming extensively in Asia , especially the most popular 150cc model. Each manufacturers fire up because of this sudden increase in popularity. So, the number of riders who want to step up to a higher displacement model has also been increasing. However, the price of 250cc model is almost double its price. We wanted to provide this market with a high-performance machine at a reasonable price. So, we have finished an all-round machine that can be enjoyed for all types of riders from beginner to advanced level.
