▲MY2020 890DUKE R
The new "890 DUKE R" has appeared from KTM, and it will be released starting from May. In this column, I will introduce the outline of the new motorcycle based on the information of the digital presentation for media published at the KTM headquarters!
Based on the 790DUKE and upgraded in all directions
The "890 DUKE R," which was first unveiled at EICMA 2019 last year, is a sports naked model with a significantly upgraded engine and chassis based on the 790DUKE. Since the target situation is majestic winding or a circuit, the undercarriage has been upgraded to a fully adjustable WP suspension and a high-performance BREMBO braking system.
Increased power and torque by increasing the displacement
First of all, the engine expands the displacement to 890cc by expanding both bore x strokes based on the 790DUKE water-cooled parallel two-cylinder. Also, by increasing the compression ratio from 12,7 to 13,5, the maximum output from 105ps to 121ps, the maximum torque is greatly improved from 87Nm to 99Nm, the power band has also been expanded. At the same time, the camshaft also increases combustion efficiency by changing the profile and lift amount, and by expanding the intake and exhaust valve diameter. At the same time, the crankshaft weight is raised by 20% and the new balancer shaft is introduced, thereby improving the stability of the rider's ability without compromising the agility.
The FI system jointly developed with Italy's prestigious DELLORTO company has also been improved exclusively for 890DUKE, and the throttle body is a short funnel with a diameter of 46mm. While improving the throttle response, the controllability in the low-speed range is also enhanced. Besides, the latest-design transmission is also specialized to the 890 based on the 790, and the quick-shifter realizes accurate and smooth shift operation.
Control the body posture with the new 6-axis sensor
Electronic controls had also evolved further. The new 6-axis sensor equipped with a bank angle sensor is equipped as standard with ABS and MTC (traction control) for cornering, enabling comprehensive control including motorcycle pitching and drift volume. In the ride mode (RAIN, STREET, and SPORT), an optional TRACK setting is also available, and in addition to the 9-level traction level, the anti-wheelie and throttle control can be optionally customized. In addition, MSR (Motor slip regulation) is set as an option, and the rear wheel lock is controlled even on low-μ road surfaces that cannot be supplemented by ordinary slipper clutch or during sudden braking, ensuring safety.
Adopted full adjustable WP suspension, aggressive riding position
It is single-seated exclusively for solo rides, like the high-performance version of the "R" specification, and the weight of the motorcycle is also 3.3kg lighter in total. The frame color, like other "R" specifications, is decorated with vivid KTM orange. The biggest improvement is that the WP APEX suspensions of all adjustment type were adapted.
The comfortable ride on the street was intact and accommodated the high-dimensional riding on the circuit. In addition, the minimum ground clearance for more sporty handling is 15mm up. This also optimizes the swing arm drooping angle, and further enhance traction performance by increasing the anti-squat effect.
In addition, the seat height has been slightly increased to 840mm, which is 10mm higher than the previous model, and the steering wheel position is slightly lower to the front to improve the front ground contact feeling. The footpegs position is also raised and the riding position is set to be more aggressive, such as moving in backward.
Brake and tires also strengthened to circuit correspondence
The brake system is also treated to BREMBO's latest component "Stylema" luxury and the front disc is 0.5kg lighter per disc, even though it is largely diameters from 300mm to 320mm. In addition to the high-rigidity radial monoblock brake caliper, the master cylinder also introduced a multi-click system with adjustable lever ratio and piston diameter, enabling more accurate and delicate brake control.
In addition, the total weight of the brake unit decreased by 1.2 kg, contributing to improved handling by reducing the under-spring weight. In line with the performance of the upgraded ride, the OE tires have adopted the newly developed MICHELIN Powercup II for aggressive riding from the public road to the circuit.
Nicknamed the (Scalpel), the 790DUKE R has been upgraded to a more powerful and agile 890DUKE. I want to look forward to that radical ride.
