MOTO HACK: How to Remove Dirt and Debris from the Calipers?

How to

Here are some of the maintenance methods we've received from the Webike Community "MOTO HACK Maintenance" campaign that we'd like to refer to. Maybe you have an idea that you'd like to try!

In this article, I'm going to introduce the maintenance HACK from Fuse 12 who ride FJ1200!

Motorcycle introduction and its maintenance

About the motorcycle

Yamaha: FJ1200
It's 29 years and 177,000 km and there are rattles here and there. I don't know how long I can drive it.

Working process

About this work I removed the pistons from the body of the motorcycle and cleaned the inside of the calipers. Surprisingly, the inside is filled with debris, or rather scum, so replacing the o-rings without cleaning the grooves is unlikely to be effective.

Working hours

About two hours

Working difficulty

It is considered intermediate.

Items to use

STRAIGHT Caliper Hojiro
Brand: STRAIGHT
Product name: Caliper Hojiro

Learn more about the work

The work of removing the calipers and pulling out the pistons is known, so I won't go into it here. This section only describes how to clean the groove in the caliper where the dust seal and oil seal fit.

I split the calipers and broke them apart. It has taken an endless amount of time for the ballast to get this far because the pistons were sticking together. It was difficult to separate the calipers by themselves, even with a compressor.

It should be noted that if you leave it attached to the body of the motorcycle and give it a niggle, it comes off without a hitch. However, if one comes off, the other remains, so both calipers need to release the pistons a little bit at a time at the same time.

The left and right sides of the split calipers. By the way, Yamaha does not recommend splitting it up.

Scrub with a Caliper Hojiro to remove the dirt and debris inside. It's a good idea to remove some debris before splitting the calipers. Why is there so much scum in the ditch? You'd be surprised at how much it comes out. Rinse with water after removing the cusk. Then let it dry and apply brake fluid to the piston contact surface of the caliper and install the piston.

Advice

I had been using a screwdriver bit, but it is not as good as a special tool. Also, the opposing pistons must be disassembled to work, but some manufacturers do not allow it, so you have to do it at your own risk.
