MOTO HACK: Cleaning GSX-R1000’s Throttle Due to Unstable Idling!

How to

Here are some of the maintenance methods we've received from the Webike Community "MOTO HACK Maintenance" campaign that we'd like to refer to. Maybe you have an idea that you'd like to try!

In this article, I'm going to introduce the maintenance HACK from K1 who ride the GSX-R1000!

Motorcycle introduction and its maintenance

The idling of GSX-R1000 K7 became unstable, so I cleaned it. According to the Internet, Suzuki Hayabusa and GSX-R have unstable idling due to fuel residue on the throttle body (e.g. combustion at low rpm).

The rest is a cotton swab, disposable chopsticks and a rag.

In the meantime, remove the fuel tank and air box. If you can lift up the fuel tank and scratch it with a stick, you may be able to work without removing the fuel tank, but I remove it because it is too small and difficult to work.

After the throttle body is revealed, wrap a little bit of waste paper around the chopsticks and soak the injection cleaner into the waste paper.

Scrub the inside of each cylinder of the throttle body gently with the disposable chopsticks soaked in the waste cloth. Just scrubbing. Finish scrubbing with a cotton swab. Do that to the 4 cylinders.

The rag in the picture is the dirt for two cylinders. It is surprisingly dirty.

This is the injection cleaner I used.

Carburetor cleaner doesn't seem to work for injection, so I chose Yamaha chemicals that are injection compatible.

I also removed the ICS valve and cleaned it, but it wasn't too dirty.

After cleaning, I installed the airbox and fuel tank. I had drained the fuel beforehand, so I refueled. I put the required amount of this PEA cleaner in the fuel tank when I refueled.

Advice

Before cleaning the throttle body, put plastic on the throttle mouth and put a rubber band on it and cover it beforehand. After that, I think it's better to blow around the area with air to remove any debris so that the debris doesn't get into the throttle body quite as much while you're working.

I've done a test ride around the area with a little bit of turning. Idling has stabilized and seems to have improved.
