MOTO HACK: Helmet Holder for OEM Use is Much Cheaper than Buying Aftermarket Parts

How to

Kawasaki VERSYS-X 250 OEM HACK

Introducing the passionate story of Toku who rides the  VERSYS-X 250, from Webike Community's "MOTO HACK" campaign.

He will share how to divert the OEM parts of the  VERSYS-X 250 since
he is the owner.

A brief self-introduction

I have owned a Kawasaki Versys 250 since spring 2020. I really like the vehicle itself, but the Versys 250 requires you to remove the seat to use the helmet holder, which I found to be quite cumbersome when I had to leave the motorcycle for a quick shopping trip or a touring destination with my luggage on the seat. When it was troublesome, I would lay down and hang it on the mirror, but there were times when I was worried about it being stolen or falling.

A brief description of this HACK

This time I was able to install a helmet holder on my Versys 250 by using the genuine Suzuki Choinori parts.

Parts, tools, and things needed for this HACK

Name of product: Suzuki Helmet Holder for Suzuki's Choinori
Item's stock number: 95700-31860

The body is plated for the price, and it's full of luxury! (LOL) The lock part is smooth. I like that it comes with a spare key!

Other tools you'll need include an Allen wrench and a thick sheet of plastic. The plastic sheet is to prevent damage to the mounting area, so if you don't care about it, you don't have to, or you can substitute plastic tape, rubber sheets, etc.

The Suzuki logo is a bit too assertive in the key area too, but it's well made and the chrome paint on the locks is of pretty high quality!

How to do the HACK, instructions, work instructions, etc.

The Versys 250 comes with a sturdy pipe frame to support the rear carrier, so it's very easy to install it here with an Allen key. Even if you don't have a Versys, I believe it can be installed on pipe frames and handles up to 25mm in diameter.

I'm measuring the dimensions of the helmet holder with a caliper. The maximum diameter is 25mm, so I think it can be installed on handlebars, clamps, pipe frames, etc.

As for the installation on the Versys, I made some minor adjustments to the angle to prevent rain from entering the keyhole and to position it so that it doesn't exceed the full width of the keyhole, while still making it easy to actually hang the helmet. The installation took an easy 10 minutes.

When tightening the two cap bolts with an Allen wrench, the trick is to tighten them evenly.

It is installed on the Versys pipe frame. I put it in a safe area where it won't interfere with the tandem rider's grab and where I can hook up the luggage net. Also, I know it's only temporary, but you can hang an eco-bag on it, which is all the rage right now, so I encourage you all to give it a try!

Summary of HACK

Compared to the relatively high price of 4,000 yen for the Versys 250 compatible helmet holders sold by Kijima, the OEM Suzuki parts here are cheaper at around 1,000 yen, and since it can be easily installed, I think this is a recommended hack! It's only 2,000 yen to install two of these for the passenger, so if you'd like to install one in your own vehicle, please consider it!

Thank you, Toku, for posting that valuable stock diversion HACK!
