We are conscious of those who feel that the cowling of the popular FZ400R is too powerful!

In 1984, Yamaha grew impatient with the lack of attention being given to the XJ400ZS, a water-cooled version of the XJ400, so they decided to take a bold step and released the FZ400R, which was fitted with a fairing similar to the factory machines that competed in F3 races. The half-cowling design gave it a casual look and was a huge hit.
However, even as its popularity soared, Yamaha was aware that there were people who weren't keen on riding a machine with a fairing in the first place, so they planned to allow people to enjoy the same riding experience as the FZ400R, which was renowned for its good handling, by removing the fairing. A year later, in March 1985, they released the FZ400Z, with an N in the name to stand for naked.

The FZ400R, which led the replica boom, had the same color scheme as the F3 factory machine and was released in only one type with no variations.
The FZ400N, on the other hand, had casual graphics that didn't give the impression of a racing machine and was clad in a vivid base color of red and blue.
